What is a salon?

Salon (gathering) “ “Salon, from the French word Salon (a living room or parlor), means a conversational gathering. A Salon is an evening length conversation gathering of people under the roof of an inspiring host, held partly to amuse one another and partly to refine the taste and increase the knowledge of the participants through conversation.
The earliest salons date back to the early 1600s, to a literary circle hosted by the Marquess de Rambouillet, an Italian-born French aristocrat. By the 18th century, salons had developed a more formalised structure and a stronger focus on literature, learning and debate. As one would expect, discussion in pre-revolutionary salons revolved around politics, philosophy and Enlightenment ideas.
